LOS ANGELES — Netflix fans were treated to a spine-tingling first look at Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein adaptation during the streamer’s Tudum global fan event Saturday night, where the Oscar-winning director premiered the long-awaited teaser trailer for his gothic reimagining of Mary Shelley’s classic novel.
The sneak peek was unveiled during a star-studded presentation in Los Angeles, where Tudum LIVE — named after Netflix’s signature opening sound — brought together thousands of fans in person and millions more online. The annual event, which celebrates Netflix’s global content slate, featured exclusive news, previews and surprise appearances from the streamer’s biggest stars and creators.
In a pre-recorded greeting, Jacob Elordi, who stars as Frankenstein’s creature, welcomed audiences before del Toro took the stage alongside co-stars Oscar Isaac and Mia Goth. The trio discussed the film’s emotional and artistic weight, offering fans rare insight into the making of what del Toro described as a “deeply personal” project decades in the making.
“This is a story I’ve been chasing most of my adult life,” del Toro said, reflecting on his creative journey and passion for Shelley’s 1818 novel. Known for genre-defining work like Pan’s Labyrinth and The Shape of Water, del Toro brings his signature blend of heart and horror to Frankenstein, exploring the story’s enduring themes of creation, rejection and humanity.
Isaac, who portrays the tormented Dr. Victor Frankenstein, praised del Toro’s immersive filmmaking style and called the adaptation “a poetic and terrifying vision.” Goth, whose role is still under wraps, added that working on the film felt like “being part of a living, breathing piece of art.”
The teaser trailer, exclusive to Tudum attendees, delivered a visually arresting first glimpse of the film. With flickering candlelight, haunting set design, and brief flashes of Elordi’s monstrous transformation, the footage leaned into atmosphere over exposition — enough to leave audiences breathless and hungry for more.
While Netflix has yet to confirm a release date, Frankenstein is set to stream exclusively on the platform. It joins a growing lineup of high-profile projects from del Toro, who previously created Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiositiesfor Netflix in 2022.
Tudum 2025 also included updates on fan-favorite series like Stranger Things, Bridgerton, and The Witcher, alongside major announcements from global franchises. But it was del Toro’s dark and ambitious adaptation that stole the spotlight — and quite possibly, fans’ hearts.
