LOS ANGELES — Netflix’s hit supernatural series Stranger Things will return in 2025 for its fifth and final season, the streaming service confirmed during its Tudum global fan event.

The new season, which resumed production earlier this year following delays from the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, is set to conclude the story of Eleven and the town of Hawkins, Indiana — nearly a decade after the show’s 2016 debut.

While no exact premiere date has been announced, Netflix’s Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria confirmed the 2025 timeline during the company’s Upfront presentation in May.

Much of the original ensemble cast appeared on stage at Tudum. The actors, many of whom began the show as children, have grown up both in front of the camera and in the public eye.

Millie Bobby Brown, who was 12 years old when Stranger Things premiered, has since launched a successful beauty brand and starred in the Enola Holmes franchise. Finn Wolfhard has appeared in films such as Ghostbusters: Afterlife and formed an indie rock band, The Aubreys. Gaten Matarazzo has returned to Broadway in Dear Evan Hansen, while Caleb McLaughlin has led projects including Concrete Cowboy. Noah Schnapp recently announced his acceptance to the University of Pennsylvania and has been active in the business space.

The cast reflected on the emotional impact of wrapping the series during their appearance at Tudum, where fans from around the world gathered to celebrate Netflix’s biggest titles. The annual fan event, named after the platform’s opening sound, included exclusive trailers, cast panels and announcements from across the streaming giant’s slate.

The Duffer Brothers, who created the series, have previously said Season 5 will be a return to the show’s roots in both tone and structure.

“Season 1 is the blueprint,” Matt Duffer said in a 2022 interview. “There’s something poetic about going back to the beginning.”

Stranger Things has become one of Netflix’s most popular and influential titles, earning over 1.8 billion viewing hours globally with its fourth season and inspiring a range of merchandise, tie-in books, video games, and a stage play set to open in London’s West End.

Filming for Season 5 officially began in January 2024, with more content and previews expected to roll out later this year. The final season will stream exclusively on Netflix in 2025.
