LOS ANGELES — Disney’s live-action/CGI remake of Lilo & Stitch has officially become the second-highest grossing film of 2025, surpassing Ryan Coogler’s Sinners at the box office this weekend. With more than $610.8 million in global earnings and $280.1 million domestically, the reimagined tale continues to resonate with audiences around the world.
Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On), the 2025 film marks a bold and emotional return to one of Disney’s most culturally distinct properties. The original Lilo & Stitch was released in 2002 and stood out for its portrayal of Hawaiian culture, themes of family and belonging, and its quirky alien-meets-Earth premise. This new version retains the heart of that original while expanding its scope with modern storytelling techniques and visual technology.
The film stars Maia Kealoha, a breakout newcomer, as Lilo Pelekai, alongside Sydney Agudong as her older sister and guardian, Nani. Zach Galifianakis voices the eccentric alien Stitch, with Courtney B. Vance and Tia Carrere (a returning original cast member, this time in a new role) rounding out the ensemble. The film was praised for its diverse cast, its respectful handling of Hawaiian cultural elements, and its commitment to authenticity — especially following early production criticisms over casting choices and local representation.
Filming took place primarily on the Hawaiian island of Oʻahu, incorporating native talent both on and off screen. Disney worked with local consultants to ensure culturally accurate representation, a growing standard in the wake of increased calls for sensitivity in legacy IP remakes.
Critics and audiences alike have responded favorably to the film’s emotional tone, faithful character dynamics, and heartwarming visuals. Reviewers highlighted the film’s balance of nostalgia and innovation, with The Hollywood Reportercalling it “a loving reimagination that maintains its spirit while offering new depth.”
In surpassing Sinners, a supernatural thriller led by Michael B. Jordan and directed by Ryan Coogler, Lilo & Stitch has also demonstrated the enduring power of family-focused storytelling in a cinematic landscape often dominated by action-heavy franchises.
The only film outperforming Lilo & Stitch so far in 2025 is A Minecraft Movie, which currently leads the year’s box office with over $944 million globally.
With summer just getting started, the film’s momentum shows little sign of slowing. And for Disney, the success of Lilo & Stitch proves once again that revisiting its animated archives — when done thoughtfully — can still deliver magic at the box office.
